Chennai, 27 March 2025: In a move to promote eco-friendly living, a group of 65 students from Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai, took to the streets of Tirukazhukundram village to advocate for a cleaner, greener environment. Organized by the institute’s Karma Yoga initiative in collaboration with the Thirukazhukundram Municipality, the rally aimed to promote the use of biodegradable alternatives to plastic and raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution.
Led by Prof. Arulsamy, Head of the Karma Yoga Department, the students engaged directly with shopkeepers, vendors, and residents, distributing cloth bags and advocating for sustainable waste management practices. The rally began from the municipality office and covered a 2-kilometer stretch, was supported by local authorities, with the police ensuring smooth execution.
Dr. Suresh Ramanathan, Dean of Great Lakes Institute of Management, emphasized the significance of such initiatives in driving meaningful social change: “At Great Lakes, we believe that education extends beyond classrooms. Our students are equipped not only with business acumen but also with a deep sense of social responsibility. Through initiatives like Karma Yoga, they are making a tangible impact, that fosters sustainability and leading by putting action into practice.”
Prof. Arulsamy highlighted the long-term vision of the initiative, stating, “Sustainability starts at the grassroots level. By working closely with communities, we aim to instil habits that contribute to a healthier environment. The enthusiastic participation from students and the positive response from the locals show that small steps can lead to significant change.”
