The Launch of Geri Care Hospital, Adambakkam happened today at the hands of Padmasri Dr. V S Natarajan Father of Geriatrics in India and Shri K Lakshmi Kanthan Bharathi, Freedom Fighter and I.A.S., (Retd.,). The event was attended by prominent medical practitioners and others from the medical fraternity.
Speaking on the occasion, Padmasri Dr. V S Natarajan said, “India has more than 138 million elderly population. The proportion of the elderly population in India has increased to 10.1% in 2021 and is further likely to increase to 13.1% in 2031. In addition, 1 in 4 Indians has a risk of dying from an NCD before they reach the age of 70. Dementia is on the rise as well with over 8.8 million people living with the condition”.
Geriatric assessment is different from other specialities. For example, we Geriatricians do something called as Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) that means, geriatricians will do assessment of medical problems like Diabetes, Hypertension etc along with assessment of mental problems like anxiety, depression, dementia and assess their physical problems like falls, instability, incontinence. Social problems like elder abuse, isolation is also assessed. So, we address all these problems holistically thus giving complete care to older adults.
