Nagercoil, January 09, 2025: KIMSHEALTH, Nagercoil, a leading tertiary care hospital in the region started in Sep. ‘24, providing comprehensive healthcare services, hosted Carcinos-9, a half-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program to empower general practitioners and non-oncology specialists with enhanced knowledge and skills for early cancer detection and treatment.
KIMSHEALTH Nagercoil organized this event in collaboration with KIMSHEALTH Cancer Centre, Trivandrum and Tamil Nadu Association of Surgical Oncologists (TASO), the CME attracted, over 140 healthcare professionals from Kanyakumari District. The program featured 9 speakers and 14 experts who chaired the sessions, including TASO President Dr. Suresh Venkatachalam, Secretary Dr. Ayyappan, CME organizing Secretary Dr. Jayanand Sunil from KIMSHEALTH cancer center Trivandrum, with the topics covered during the event were the principles of medical and surgical oncology, cancer etiology, diagnostic approaches, and multidisciplinary management strategies.
The faculty highlighted the critical role of general practitioners and non-oncologists in early cancer detection and management. They emphasised that the program was specifically tailored for healthcare professionals at the grassroots level, who are often the first point of contact for patients seeking treatment for unrelated illnesses. “These professionals are uniquely positioned to recognize early signs of cancer and ensure timely intervention by guiding patients to oncology specialists”.
Dr. Lala Robin, Surgical Oncologist, as well as Dr. Kumanan J, Medical Oncologist at KIMSHEALTH Nagercoil underscored the dual challenge and opportunity in cancer care. “While the incidence of various cancers continues to rise, advancements in medicine and technology have significantly improved treatment outcomes.
Dr. Jayanand Sunil highlighted the introduction of HIPEC and its advantages in the treatment and also emphasised identifying and understanding the characteristics of, at-risk populations.
Carcinos-9 also provided insights into the latest advancements in cancer treatment and technologies. Dr. M I Sahadulla (CMD) said, “Effective cancer treatment relies on a multimodal approach that combines radiation, medication, and surgery. Significant developments have occurred across all these disciplines. In medicine, we now have new classes of antibodies, immunotherapies, and targeted oncology treatments”.
